URGENT HEALTH ALERT: FDA Upgrades Florida Blueberry Recall to Highest Risk Level
The FDA has officially upgraded the ongoing recall of frozen organic blueberries and mixed berries to a Class I status which is the highest risk designation issued by the agency. This upgrade indicates a “reasonable probability” that consuming these products will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
With the majority of reported illnesses centered in Florida, Scott Price Media is urging all residents to check their freezers immediately.
The Situation: What Happened?
The recall was escalated on August 18, 2026, following 12 confirmed illnesses across the Southeast, including 11 cases right here in Florida. Testing confirmed the presence of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O145:H28 in specific batches of frozen fruit sold at Publix Super Markets.
Four individuals have already been hospitalized due to the severity of the infection.

The recall specifically affects GreenWise Organic brand frozen berries. Check your freezer for the following items with “Best By” dates prior to February 9, 2028:

Health Risks and Symptoms
Shiga toxin-producing E. coli is particularly dangerous. Symptoms typically manifest within 3 to 9 days after consumption and include:
- Severe stomach cramps
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Low-grade fever
In severe cases, the infection can lead to Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. If you or a family member have consumed these products and are experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
What You Should Do Now
- Stop Consumption: Do not open or eat these products. Even if you have eaten some and did not get sick, the remaining fruit may still be contaminated.
- Dispose or Return: Throw the berries away in a sealed bag so pets or wildlife cannot access them, or return them to any Publix location for a full refund.
- Sanitize: If the berries were stored in a reusable container or touched your freezer shelves, wash those areas thoroughly with hot, soapy water.
